Inside FTG’s AASHTO-Accredited Laboratory Quality Program

AASHTO-accredited materials testing laboratory at Foundation Test Group supporting soils, concrete, aggregate, and masonry testing.

Foundation Test Group’s accredited laboratory follows rigorous quality management systems, technician training standards, and independent inspection programs to ensure reliable materials testing results for infrastructure projects. Accreditation isn’t just a certificate on the wall — it reflects the systems, procedures, and oversight that ensure laboratory testing is accurate, traceable, and defensible. At Foundation Test Group (FTG), our laboratory quality program supports infrastructure and construction projects across the region through standardized testing for soils, aggregate, concrete, and masonry – performed in both the field and the laboratory. For 24 years, FTG has built and strengthened laboratory processes aligned with nationally recognized standards. Our laboratory has maintained AASHTO accreditation since 2020, demonstrating that our testing procedures, personnel qualifications, and quality management practices meet rigorous industry requirements.

A Structured Quality Management System

Accredited laboratories operate within a formal Quality Management System (QMS) designed to ensure testing is performed consistently and accurately. At FTG, this system includes:

  • Documented testing procedures aligned with national standards
  • Defined data review and verification processes
  • Equipment calibration and maintenance programs
  • Detailed recordkeeping and traceability of test results

These systems provide confidence that laboratory data can support engineering decisions, regulatory requirements, and project documentation.

Technician Training and Certification

Laboratory accuracy depends heavily on the expertise of the technicians performing the testing. FTG maintains a strong focus on technician training and certification, ensuring personnel are qualified to perform testing procedures in accordance with recognized standards. Ongoing training and internal oversight reinforce consistency and maintain the integrity of laboratory operations.

Participation in National Proficiency Sample Programs

To verify testing accuracy, accredited laboratories participate in Proficiency Sample Programs (PSPs). These programs distribute standardized samples to participating laboratories, allowing results to be compared across the industry. Consistent performance in proficiency testing helps demonstrate that laboratory procedures and equipment produce reliable results.

Independent Inspection Through AASHTO re:source and CCRL

FTG’s laboratory also participates in inspection programs administered by:

  • AASHTO re:source
  • Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL)

These independent inspections review laboratory practices, equipment, documentation, and testing procedures. Participation helps ensure laboratories continue to meet the standards required for accreditation.

Leadership and Continuous Improvement

Under the leadership of Stu Fischer, Lab Supervisor, FTG continues to strengthen its QA/QC processes and reinforce a culture of compliance, precision, and accountability. Maintaining accreditation is an ongoing process that requires continuous review of procedures, documentation, and performance.

What This Means for Clients

For project owners, contractors, and engineering teams, laboratory quality systems translate directly into project reliability. FTG’s accredited laboratory program supports:

  • Reduced project risk
  • Reliable reporting
  • DOT-ready documentation
  • Traceable testing data

On critical infrastructure projects, accurate testing results are essential.
