The Value of Proficiency Sampling
As part of laboratory accreditation requirements, proficiency sampling programs are conducted for a variety of tests and materials, including concrete inspection and laboratory testing.
Concrete proficiency sampling involves mixing a batch of concrete in the laboratory, performing standard field and lab evaluations — such as slump, air content, compressive strength, and density — and submitting results to the Cement and Concrete Reference Laboratory (CCRL). Results from all participating laboratories are averaged, and each lab’s data is evaluated against the established benchmark.
This process provides valuable information regarding the inherent uncertainty of a given test method and strengthens the reliability of reported results.
By evaluating performance relative to industry peers, laboratories confirm that procedures remain within acceptable ranges of deviation. Participation in proficiency sampling supports accreditation standards, reinforces internal quality control programs, and reflects best practices in materials testing.
