What Is Total Station Monitoring?
Total station monitoring uses high-precision optical surveying equipment to track the exact coordinates of designated monitoring points over time. Whether deployed through targeted manual surveys or continuous Automated Total Stations (ATS), these instruments capture precise dimensional changes that may not be visible to the naked eye.

From Measurements to Meaningful Data
Spatial coordinates deliver maximum value when collected consistently across project milestones. Systematic optical tracking allows engineering teams to:

  • Establish Baselines: Record accurate initial conditions prior to excavation, demolition, or pile driving.
  • Identify Movement Trends: Distinguish normal environmental changes from actual structural displacement.

FTG used an ATS on a project along I95 where the roadway was experiencing significant heave during storm events. FTG utilized roadway monitoring prisms, measured by the ATS, and piezometers to identify the specific locations where heave would occur and the specific depths at which ground water pressure would increase substantially during storm events. By analyzing the roadway displacement data with the groundwater data, FTG was able to help determine the cause of the roadway heave and identify an old storm drain that had not been properly abandoned. This provided enough information for the contractor to properly remediate the area of concern and prevent future occurrences of this issue.
