Concrete is the most common building material in the world due its strength and reliability.
In modern times, with the incredible variety of concrete mix designs and uses, a good QA/QC program is integral to maintaining those characteristics. As strong as concrete can be, there are quite a few variables that can lead to reduced performance.
As a result, many projects specify testing and inspection procedures even before production begins. One of the most common tests is for organic impurities in concrete aggregates. Per ASTM C40, an aggregate sample is mixed with a sodium hydroxide solution, and the color of the resulting liquid is compared to a standard. A darker color indicates a higher organic content. This is a quick and easy way to determine if further tests need to be done to ensure adequate performance, as everything from tannic acid to sugars present in organic material can reduce the strength of concrete initially and over time.
