Construction is underway on a pedestrian bridge that will provide access between multiple neighborhoods and a local Metro Station in Washington, D.C..

The Parkside Pedestrian Bridge will cross over DC-295, as well as the WMATA/CSX railroad tracks in the area, in order to provide safe foot traffic over its 400-foot span. Auger cast in place piles for foundation support are being installed by Wagman for general contractor Fort Myer Construction Company.

FTG is on site, inspecting several phases of the Auger cast in place (ACIP) pile foundations.

Our team is responsible for monitoring all aspects of the pile installation. For this type of pile, it is essential to monitor grout volume simultaneously as the augers are withdrawn to ensure proper construction. Too little grout can cause “necking” in the pile. Over pumping can potentially cause stability issues and dramatically increase the cost of the pile.

Cost effective design and construction builds quality response while meeting the design demands of the project. Due to CSX’s railroad tracks and overhead electric line constraints, foundation contractor Wagman is installing the piles using both standard crane leads and modifications for low headroom conditions.

Further enhancing quality control, FTG is also performing Thermal Integrity Profiling (TIP) at each pier location.

Implementing TIP allows our engineers to monitor the thermal profile of the grout as it cures, adding another layer of quality control monitoring (QC) and confident quality assurance (QA). FTG, Inc. is collaborative in meeting the contractors needs for production, schedule, and quality, but even more mindful to sound, creative and safe designs.
