Project Details
The MD 273 over Big Elk Creek project is a replacement of a 57-year-old two-lane state highway bridge in Elkton, Maryland. Under MD SHA contract number CE2835180, general contractor Allan Myers is leading a multi-phase demolition & reconstruction process to create a new single spanned bridge with abutments separate from existing bridge foundations.
Foundation Test Group was assigned as the micropile designer for the bridge foundations on this project.
Micropile design challenges included developing a pile bond strength through up to 10 feet of fractured gneiss rock formations for compressive design capacities of up to 260 kips (loads that were not achievable from existing driven pile foundations). FTG conducted a verification and proof load testing program to confirm pile designs on both abutments and phases of the project.
One of FTG’s lead engineers, Kevin Tehansky P.E., provided on-site inspection and guidance of all micropile production installations to verify stratum materials and satisfactory acceptance to original design & testing. Project completion is expected in late 2020.
