As Structural Inspector of Record (SIR), part of Prince Georges County’s Third-Party Inspection Program (TPIP), Foundation Test Group, Inc. is working to ensure that the soil retaining wall is built in accordance with the project drawings and specifications.
Design elements for the retaining wall specifically address meeting the project goals for extending the parking lot and protecting the existing building from slope failure. Safety and meeting project goals are primary and key factors.
One factor that puts the slope stability at risk is the presence of over-consolidated, fissured Christiana clay with prior failure planes. This clay is located at the toe of the slope and must be removed in stages to reduce the risk of slope failure. With regard to slope stability and risk reduction, FTG is on site to inspect the removal of the Christiana clay while also monitoring the fill replacement procedure and process.
As third-party SIR, Team FTG closely monitors the constructability process and promptly reports any changes or inimitable situation located within the soil conditions to the Geotechnical Engineer of Record.
Clear monitoring and reporting allow for an immediate implementation of solutions to ensure the stability of the slope and safety for all. FTG prides itself on our commitment to safety, being detail oriented, and on our ability to communicate a successful project effectively.
